Tallulah has a plan to get all the children in the world under her power, and all she has to do is trick them into opening her nobbled presents. But how to deliver so many of them in a short space of time? Failing that, can she infiltrate at least one family by dressing up as world\'s-worst-nanny Merry Pippins and stage a daring abduction? I know I\'m generally upbeat about most of my uploads anyway, but this is absolute gold. There\'s snappy dialogue, childish insults, visual gags, a bit of slapstick, and even what looks to me like 80s computer-generated animation. (I\'d love to know exactly how that pulling of the cracker near the end was done - it looks like it was running on an Acorn or something.) On top of all of that, the Thames Television continuity showing the channel opening for the day really helps anchor the show in time. Being a one-off episode, I imagine the writers would have been in a bit of a quandary. After all, the regular series are about a girl on a quest, but that can\'t be shoe-horned into a single 20-minute slot. So, they went for an entirely self-contained story, set any time, and without explaining why T-Bag isn\'t quite as destroyed as she was at the end of the last series, or indeed why T-Shirt is even there at all. Admittedly, the show ends up feeling a little like two separate sketches - one in the grotto, one as the nanny - which are only really loosely connected until the ending. Perhaps that\'s how it started life (pure speculation on my part). But, you know what? It\'s brilliantly funny, and it works, so who cares? It brought back great memories for me, and I hope it does the same for you, too. Of the three guest stars, young James Hillier-Brook doesn\'t seem to have any credits besides this, which is a shame as he was very good. John Blythe, I\'m sorry to say, is sadly no longer with us, but he leaves a very impressive IMDB entry going back as far as 1944. Veronica Clifford played Queen Victoria as recently as 2012, has done proper Shakespeare on the television, and boasts early roles in Up Pompeii, Up the Chastity Belt, and Up the Front. Quite a trilogy, that. Veronica was also Auntie Doodah in The Bubblegum Brigade - there\'s another series that I used to watch, but now lies mostly forgotten in the archives. Tallulah hates the holiday season, so vindictively decides to spoil everybody else\'s big day - and who better to start with than Sally Simpkins? But even turning her into a Victorian street urchin isn\'t enough, and so she soon turns her attention to the ever so lovely Emily Scrumptious and struggling author friend Giles Pickens as well. There are some really great gags in this one, not least the literary references. The Sooty joke got me in particular. It\'s nice to see Kellie Bright reprising her role as Sally in between her two series - in fact, Kellie is the only regular protagonist to appear in any of the specials. We take John Hasler at T-Shirt for granted, but he\'s as brilliant as ever, too. And the sheer evil spitefulness of Tallulah is hilariously off the scale! On balance, I think I\'d pick this as my favourite of the four Christmas episodes, so it\'s a real pity that this was Elizabeth Estensen\'s last appearance in T-Bag. Just over a week later, the next series (Pearls of Wisdom) started with Georgina Hale in the lead role, and a new era was born. By all accounts, this special was shot in June and July of 1989, and it was during production that Elizabeth confirmed that talk of her departure for pastures new was true. The uncertainty dated back to the end of the previous series, so I suppose it must have been a relief for all concerned to finally have some sort of plan for the future worked out, but I for one was sad to see her go. Still, at least we got one last bout of silliness to go out on! The guest roles are played by Gillian Martell and John Clive - both making their second (and final) T-bag appearances. Gillian has done proper Dickens stuff in her time, along with Sherlock Holmes and Jane Austen adaptations. John, I\'m sorry to say, is sadly no longer with us, but his IMDB lists The Italian Job, A Clockwork Orange, a number of Carry On films, some Pink Panther films, and loads of other things - but, most interestingly, he provided John Lennon\'s speaking voice in Yellow Submarine. I\'ve deliberately left the switch from TV-am to Thames Television, the public service ad, the ident, and the associated continuity at the beginning, as I honestly find that sort of thing fascinating - it really takes me back into the era. T-Shirt decides to treat Tabatha to a night at the opera, but they run into her cousin Vanity Bag, and old rivalries are quickly rekindled. But, with the proper singer well and truly nobbled, which of the two will land the part of leading lady on the big night? Children\'s television doesn\'t get much more classy than having the likes of Georgina Hale and Glenda Jackson sharing a stage (the latter actually gets top billing), and I love the fact that they\'re willing to make such fools of themselves. In a bit of a departure, we\'re treated to an all-singing, all-dancing performance as T-Shirt\'s opera is premiered - complete with brilliantly dreadful rhymes and general half-bakedness. At times it all feels a little like one of the plays what Ernie wrote, and that\'s no bad thing. This is actually one of Glenda\'s last roles before her retirement from acting and subsequent political career. Megan Kelly, meanwhile, has only one other television appearance to her name, and that was in an episode of Spatz (from the same writers, of course). That said, I gather she\'s far more prolific in the theatre world. James Saxon clocked up four appearances in T-Bag down the years, and completed the Pressman-Cathro \'Big Three\' by guesting in both Spatz and Mike and Angelo, too - he was a very familiar face on television in his time, even if he was never a household name. Completing the cast is Peter Woodthorpe, a distinguished actor whose IMDB entry goes back to the mid-50s and includes proper Shakespeare and everything. Tabatha returns to Bag Towers and introduces T-Shirt to her mother, but all that seasonal good cheer is too much and she soon declares a Christmas-free zone. Then word arrives of royal intentions to visit the castle, and they\'re forced to lay on a feast and entertainment. Of all the 94 T-Bag episodes, this is possibly the one with the biggest moral to the story. In fact, it comes across almost like a parable at the end, but that\'s not to say that it\'s all po-faced and serious - on the contrary, the dialogue is right up there with some of the best. "I worked my servants to the bone for you" was a particular favourite of mine, but beyond that, they also pulled out all the stops and used the extra five minutes afforded to the special to give us some great slapstick in the shape of the circus. It\'s reminiscent of Looney Tunes at times. There are four guest stars in this one, which is well above the average. Peggy Mount, who sadly is no longer with us, was an absolute stalwart of early-ish British television with an IMDB page going back to 1953. Her final credit is in The Tomorrow people, from the same writers. John Cater, I\'m sorry to say, has also since passed away, but reading up on him finds that he was in the first London season of the Royal Shakespeare Company back in 1961, and he is most noted for his regular part in The Duchess of Duke Street. Other credits include I, Claudius, Alcock and Gander, Z Cars, The Other \'Arf, The Kenny Everett Television Show, One Foot in the Grave, Jeeves and Wooster, and ChuckleVision, among loads of other. John was also in two other episodes of T-Bag. Sebastian Abinieri has had recurring roles in the likes of Coronation Street and Juliet Bravo, while he too made another appearance in T-Bag and one in Mike and Angelo. Finally, Laurence Bouvard was also in The Tomorrow People, but seems to have since refocused her career on voice acting, notching up credits in numerous animations and video games. Phew!
